Have you ever thought that one of your neighbors is a murderer? I know I have, and so did Alfred Hitchcock, who crafted this classic thriller about a peeper who correctly believes someone close to him is a killer.
James Stewart stars as L.B. Jeffries, a professional photographer stuck in a wheelchair due to an injury at a racetrack. Alone in his comfy Greenwich Village apartment, he uses his camera to spy on his neighbors, like the sexy Miss Torso (Georgine Darcy) and jewelry salesman Lars Thorwald (Raymond Burr). When Thorwald’s wife disappears one rainy night, L.B. thinks Lars murdered her. To prove it, he enlists his nurse Stella (Thelma Ritter) and model girlfriend Lisa (Grace Kelly). Is L.B. right? Or has his boredom caused him to imagine a crime that was never committed?
Rear Window is generally considered one of the best movies ever made, and who are we to argue with that assertion? From the tight direction, playful script and sharp performances, the movie is just about perfect. It’s also a classic movie that never feels old or outdated. It’s just as thrilling now as it was in 1954, and it’s so entertaining, it might convince you to pick up your binoculars and see what your neighbors are up to.
