Liam Rosenior admitted he’ll make no excuses about starting mid-season, but pleaded with fans to give him a chance.

Having been announced as Chelsea’s new head coach on Tuesday, Rosenior faced the media for the time on Friday afternoon.

The 41-year-old watched Chelsea lose 2-1 to Fulham at Craven Cottage from the stands, and will take charge of his first game against Charlton in the FA Cup third round on Saturday evening.

Liam Rosenior won’t make any excuses

Rosenior knows he’s got a tough job on his hands, and coming in mid-season only makes things more difficult, especially with the games coming thick and fast for the remainder of the month.

The Blues currently sit eighth in the Premier League, and are on a run of one win in their last nine games, with the battle to make Champions League football very much on.

Rosenior has taken two training sessions with Chelsea.

Rosenior will be under pressure to hit the ground running, and the quickest way to win fans over is by getting results, and he insisted he wouldn’t be making excuses about starting mid-season.

“I’m not going to make excuses about starting mid-season,” he said as quoted by Give Me Sport.

“I’m here because Chelsea is expected to win, rightfully so, every game that they play.

“You’ve seen the appointments of managers in this league and in Europe: if you don’t win, you’re in trouble.

“I need to manage to win in the short term, but also I need to have an eye on the long term so we can be successful over that period.”

Champions League qualification vital for Chelsea

The aim at the start of the season was Champions League qualification and going on deep cup runs, and that’s unlikely to have changed because Rosenior is now in the dugout.

Chelsea have reportedly told Rosenior Champions League qualification is “critical” and he’s got to get Chelsea on a run of form they’ve not shown all season if they want to achieve it.

The Blues simply can’t afford to miss out on the Champions League, and will have to really up their game if they are to have any chance of qualifying.
