Did Rob Reiner’s Son Nick Reiner Live With His Parents? What to Know

Rob Reiner and wife Michele Singer Reiner’s son Nick Reiner was arrested for the murders of both his parents.

Rob and Michele were found dead inside their California house on December 14, 2025, from apparent stab wounds. The couple was 78 and 70, respectively.

Nick was subsequently arrested for allegedly killing his parents but has not entered a plea. He is scheduled to be arraigned on January 7, 2026.

“This is a devastating tragedy that has befallen the Reiner family,” Nick’s attorney, Alan Jackson, said in a December 17, 2025, statement. “We all recognized that our hearts go out to the entire Reiner family. There are very, very complex and serious issues that are associated with this case. Those need to be thoroughly, but very carefully dealt with and examined and looked at and analyzed.”

In addition to Nick, Rob and Michele shared daughter Romy and son Nick. (Rob was also the adoptive father of his late ex-wife Penny Marshall’s daughter, Tracy.)

“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day. The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience,” a statement from Nick’s siblings read. “They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”

They concluded, “We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life. We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.”

CNN reported in December 2025 that Nick had been staying in a guest house on Rob and Michele’s property, claiming that it was detached from the main structure.

During a 2018 appearance on the “Dopey” podcast, Nick claimed that he was once “sequestered” in the guest house while using drugs.

“I got totally spun out on uppers — I think it was coke and something else — and I was up for days on end,” Nick, who has struggled with addiction through the years, recalled on the podcast. “I started punching out different things in my guest house. I went 10 rounds in my guest house. I literally punched the TV.”

According to Nick, he “wrecked” nearly every furnishing in the guest house.

“They told me I had to go,” he said, seemingly revealing his parents attempted to kick him out. “I don’t remember the specifics of it.”

“I was never, ever too busy,” Rob said on NPR in September 2025. “I was hands-on and trying to do whatever I thought I could do to help. I’m sure I made mistakes and, you know, I’ve talked about that with him since.”

Rob’s 2015 movie, Being Charlie, was loosely inspired by Nick’s struggles with substance abuse.

While speaking with NPR just three months before his death, Rob stated that Nick was doing “great.”

“He’s been great [and] hasn’t been doing drugs for over six years,” Rob said. “He’s in a really good place.”
