Harry Maguire: Liverpool should sign Man United star, says club icon

Liverpool should sign Manchester United defender Harry Maguire this summer in a move which would send shockwaves across English football, according to an Anfield icon.

Maguire‘s contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season, and there has yet to be a breakthrough in negotiations over an extension.

The English centre-back turns 33 in March and is one of United’s highest earners, making a new deal on reduced terms the only viable option.

However, INEOS are understood to be wary of hindering the development of Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven, with the young defenders considered two of the club’s brightest prospects.

There have also been a number of teams who have expressed interest in signing Maguire, both inside and outside the Premier League.

Bournemouth, Chelsea, Everton and West Ham have all been linked with the Sheffield native, while Serie A heavyweights Inter Milan and Napoli are also on the hunt.

There is even the possibility of a switch to the Middle East, with a number of Saudi Pro League sides keeping a mindful eye on the big centre-half with an even bigger reputation.

Maguire is intent on remaining at Old Trafford, however, and is prioritising a new deal over offers elsewhere. His imperious performances in the back-to-back victories over Manchester City and Arsenal have only strengthened his case, with caretaker manager Michael Carrick a big fan of the experienced defender as well.

Hamann wants Harry

However, should INEOS allow Maguire to leave Old Trafford this summer, Dietmar Hamann believes Liverpool should bring him to Merseyside on a free transfer.

The former midfielder, who won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005, is adamant Arne Slot’s side needs “more depth at the back” after watching his old side struggle defensively this season.

“If [Maguire is] available on a free then obviously [they’ll] have to think about it because I think what Liverpool need is more depth at the back,” Hamann says (as relayed by TEAMtalk).

The German also praised Maguire’s mental resilience after fighting back to re-establish himself at United, despite a number of difficult setbacks, including having the captaincy taken off him and receiving brutal criticism from swathes of the fanbase.

“You’ve got to give it to Harry Maguire because he got so much stick in the last few years and he always comes back.”

However, The Peoples Person would advise the centre-back not to return to the red half of Manchester if he follows Hamann’s advice and crosses the uncrossable divide in the north west of England.
