From Jamie Campbell Bower‘s intriguing take on Stranger Things‘ Vecna to Bill Skarsgård‘s chilling iteration of Nosferatu, there’s a surprising amount of hot monsters on our screens these days.
Skarsgård has made a name for himself playing strangely appealing creatures since his blood-hungry character on Hemlock Grove. From there, Skarsgård terrified Us as Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the It franchise — and as Count Orlok in Nosferatu.
“He’s gross. But it is very sexualized,” he told Esquire in 2024 about the role he considered “erotic” for viewers. “It’s playing with a sexual fetish about the power of the monster and what that appeal has to you.”
Skarsgård continued: “Hopefully you’ll get a little bit attracted by it and disgusted by your attraction at the same time.”
On the small screen, Bower has left many of Us confused by whether we are more attracted to him as Mr. Whatsit or as the sadistic Vecna.
“I’m grateful … the whole effects team — we’re very grateful for the fact that you think [Vecna] is sexy,” Campbell joked in a 2022 Netflix featurette. “If you can’t have me at my Vecna then you don’t deserve me at my One.”
