Ike Barinholtz, Jenny Slate, And Beck Bennett Lead New Simon Rich Broadway Comedy

A new comedic play is going to be presented on Broadway, and the cast is absolutely phenomenal. Ike Barinholtz, Jenny Slate, and Beck Bennett have been cast in the lead roles for ‘All Out: Comedy About Ambition’, which is simply the newest work of Simon Rich. The production also includes Kevin Del Aguila and Olivia Puckett as the understudies. The news of the casting has definitely stirred the atmosphere and signals that it is still very much the transition of comedy icons from the small screen to the big screen.

The primary roles in Simon Rich’s new theatrical project were officially confirmed by BroadwayWorld. The play, titled ‘All Out: Comedy About Ambition,’ promises to bring a humorous, clean portrayal of the professional ambition to the New York stage. Simon Rich, who is the brain behind the script and perhaps is best known as one of the most prolific humor writers or for being on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ is the one taking that venture.

Barinholtz, who was part of ‘MADtv’ and starred in ‘Neighbors,’ will play one of the characters. Slate, who was awarded for her voice acting in ‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes On’ and also was with ‘SNL,’ will be next to him. Along with them, Beck Bennett, another ‘SNL’ alumni who’s famous for his characters and sketches has been cast to make the trio complete. The casting of Kevin Del Aguila and Olivia Puckett as invisibles was also highlighted, and it was a point that did not escape the industry.

The industry’s response to the casting was predominantly positive. In particular, some actors were singled out in the comments and the audience expressed their delight at the moves of such actors from the small screen to the Broadway district. One user remarked on this trend, ‘Beck Bennett has finally got his recognition. He’s really good.’ Another person quickly concurred saying, ‘That’s just how I feel too. It’s risky to leave SNL as the artist is very popular there. Still, he is making a bold statement by showing he is coming up. So happy for him.’ Such sentiments help to promote the idea that there is a successful transition from the taxing weekly grind of sketch comedy on television to the even more demanding live theater universe.

Ike Barinholtz’s backing was equally strong. A fan was enthusiastic saying ‘Let’s go! Ike Barinholtz on Broadway?! I’m obsessed.’ Another person was more of a realist and thus pointed out his talent by going as far as stating, ‘Dude! Ike Barinholtz is a double (at least) threat.’ In addition, the casting also triggered some nostalgic comments with respect to the connecting of comedy bloodlines. One critic wrote, ‘2/3 from SNL, 1/3 from MADTV,’ and another one, in a more absorbed way, said, ‘Looks like we have a MADTV x SNL crossover, folks.’

The announcement of the roles of Kevin Del Aguila and Olivia Puckett as understudies received compliments. A comment, that said, ‘YES FOR SHOUTING OUT UNDERSTUDIES,’ not only pointed to the often-unnoticed roles but also thanked the ones in question for being acknowledged. Some users even mentioned their connections compared to one stating, ‘I don’t think about it when it’s Olivia Puckett,’ and another, probably a parent of the star-girl, asserting, ‘My daughter Olivia is a star!!’

Not everyone though seemed excited about the cast and one of the critiques raised an issue of the reading-based format of the performance, ‘This is the case where they just sit and read, right?’ This seems to suggest the play might be using certain stylistic approaches, although specifics regarding the setting have yet to be revealed. Another commentator took Broadway’s financial situation from an unusual angle and commented, ‘For 200 bucks, I expect an artist personally to know the entire play perfectly and perform it, not to sit on a stool and read a short story from a script.’ Another user presenting a philosophical view asked, ‘Are we continuously turning into a kind of society where only the very famous will get access to everything?’

To sum up, the hype is tremendous, although some scattered critiques do exist. The likes of ‘Holy crap. Holy crap. Holy crap.’ and ‘YES YES YESH OH YEA BABEY’ are the types of statements that manifested the overwhelming joy of the theater and comedy communities encompassing everyone. This casting is a great turning point for artists, especially for Bennett and Slate, as they come back to the audience in a more refined Broadway setting.

The whole production is just looking for its significant first night—theater space in contemporary comedy is already filled with viewers who are attracted by the combination of a nonchalant-age author’s writing with the excellent acting skills of people already familiar from the television
