James Ransone Wife and Kids: A Guide to the Late It Actor’s Family

James Ransone is survived by his wife, Jamie McPhee, and two kids.

News broke on Sunday, December 21 that The Wire alum died at age 46. Us Weekly confirmed via the Los Angeles Medical Examiner records that Ransone had died by suicide.

McPhee has since spoken out in the wake of her husband’s death with a heartfelt Instagram tribute.

“I told you I have loved you 1000 times before and I know I will love you again,” she captioned the social media post on Sunday. “You told me — I need to be more like you and you need to be more like me — and you were so right. Thank you for giving me the greatest gifts — you, Jack and Violet. We are forever.”

While Ransone didn’t publicly speak much about his family before he died, Jamie often offered insight into their home life, sharing Instagram photos of the actor and their kids.

“Another trip around the sun today. Thanks for all the birthday wishes,” Jamie captioned a family photo in January 2022. “I am so grateful for this life with all its completely perfect highs and utterly heartbreaking lows and everything in between. Love to all my friends around the world. And at least Violet knows how to pose for a picture.”

A GoFundMe page has since been started with a goal of $120,000 to raise money “to support Jamie and the children as they navigate life after an unimaginable loss,” the website reads.

“Its purpose is simple: to give Jamie the space to focus fully on Jack and Violet, to care for them, protect their sense of security, and ensure they have a bright future — even without James’s light present in their everyday lives,” the GoFundMe page reads.

Who Are James Ransone’s Parents?

The late Ransone — who was called PJ by family and friends — was raised by parents, Joyce and James II, in Baltimore. His father was a Vietnam War veteran, the actor revealed in a July 2015 interview.

Ransone also has a younger brother, but further details about him have not been publicly revealed.

Ransone and McPhee got married in September 2017 at Rosewood Beach on Lake Michigan, according to her Instagram. There aren’t many details about their relationship but McPhee did offer an inside look into their life with their two kids with several social media posts.

“Happy Birthday to the greatest dad of all time, my bold and brilliant husband PJ,” she captioned a June 2022 post. “I hope our children inherit your bravery and yes I let him skateboard down hills with Jack when he was 1.”
