It’s hard to believe that nearly 25 years ago, Disney Channel fans were introduced to Hilary Duff’s Lizzie McGuire.
The hit show, which aired from 2001 to 2004, introduced Duff in the role of 13-year-old Lizzie McGuire as she attempted to navigate the personal and social issues of being a teenager. It quickly developed a cult fanbase that clung to the show’s genuine storytelling, fun comedic moments and meaningful lessons about growing up.
While Nickelodeon launched star after star in the late ‘9os – Melissa Joan Hart (Clarissa Explains It All), Larisa Oleynik (The Secret World of Alex Mack), Amanda Bynes (The Amanda Show) — Disney Channel was playing catch-up.
But on January 12, 2001, it had a real contender thanks to a kind and kinda clumsy 13-year-old named Lizzie McGuire. As played by the equally appealing Duff, she charmed audiences, who related to her awkward adventures. “She really didn’t have a ‘spot.’ She wasn’t popular, and she wasn’t a dork,” Duff recalled of the character in 2018. “Girls needed someone like that to look up to. And that is really who I was at that time in my life, too.”
Lindsay Lohan auditioned to play Lizzie, but Duff was a home run. Lalaine costarred as Lizzie’s best friend, Miranda, with Adam Lamberg as eventual love interest Gordo.
As for the McGuires, Jake Thomas played irritating younger brother Matt, with Hallie Todd and Robert Carradine as Lizzie’s parents.
“There’s a serious love for the show and the characters. For a lot of adults today, we were with them during formative years,” Thomas, 35, tells Us. “Our stories and our faces are ingrained in their memory, and that’s a really beautiful thing.” Fun fact: A tradition began before table reads for “producers, writers, everybody,” he says, to sing the boppy theme song.
In a unique twist, Lizzie had an animated version of herself to voice her inner thoughts. But in most respects, Lizzie was just like Us: the mortification of the first bra, the agony of junior high photo days and (way back when) the conflict arising from Instant Messenger miscommunications.
Let’s not forget the guest stars! Thomas recalls Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler asking to join (he played Santa Claus!) to score dad points with his kids. “They only needed him for a couple hours, and he was like, ‘No, I want to be here all day.”
Aaron Carter appeared after the show’s writers pitched him the concept — at his 13th birthday party. “Hilary had a giant crush on him that was clear after that night,” writer Nina G. Bargiel recalls to Us. “So I was like, ‘Wouldn’t it be adorable if they had a cute kiss?” That’s where we came up with the mistletoe.” (The two ended up dating IRL!)
Before Emily in Paris, it was Lizzie in Rome. In 2003’s The Lizzie McGuire Movie, she pretended to be an Italian pop star because that’s “What Dreams Are Made Of” (her iconic song!).
Years later, Disney+ attempted a revival, but creative differences led to its being canceled before any of Us saw a single episode. “There were just disagreements on how far we could take her,” Duff, 38, shared in November. “I wasn’t trying to have her wake up and do bong rips … but she was a normal 30-year-old.”
With all 65 episodes on Disney+, new generations of tweens are discovering Lizzie.
“The slang changes, the technology changes, but those things they were going through don’t change. Feeling left out or getting in a fight with your friend — those things still happen,” Bargiel says.
Much of the cast, like Lalaine, Lamberg and Ashlie Brillault (frenemy Kate), have left Hollywood behind. Clayton Snyder (cool classmate Ethan) became a professional water polo player!
Duff, meanwhile, took on grown-up roles in Younger and How I Met Your Father, among others. On Feb. 20, 2026, she releases her sixth studio album, Luck … Or Something.
Thomas is, in a way, still Lizzie-adjacent: “I direct a lot of kids’ commercials and kids’ promos.”
