The actor Matthew Lillard recently starred in a new Mint Mobile commercial where he was ‘universally loved’ in a funny way. The brand owner, Ryan Reynolds, made a cameo in the ad, which also received a big wave of love from the online community affirming that Lillard is indeed one of the public’s favorite actors and therefore he has already secured his spot in the pop culture.

The short film is a clever and funny one. The first statement claims that there are only two things that everyone agrees on: saving money and ‘beloved actor Matthew Lillard.’ Then, Lillard appears and diplomatically says, ‘I mean, it is not unanimous, you know?’ The ad then takes a turn and mentions that there is only one thing that is accepted by everyone—saving money via Mint Mobile—before the last title card reiterates the affection for Lillard. The actor even has a moment where he is thinking about his character, guessing why he is in the commercial and uttering, ‘I am not saying Zoinks,’ a reference to his iconic voice role as Shaggy from Scooby-Doo.

There was a very quick and extremely positive public reaction. The cleverness of the ad was one of the reasons for its popularity; it turned into an outlet for people’s personal expression of liking for Matthew Lillard. One user wrote, ‘My husband and I were discussing how you are the only one of the very few stars that everyone adores and there is absolutely nothing negative said about you. Keep on with it.’ The majority of folks seem to uphold this point which not only reached narrowly within the world of fans but also transversed the age groups of people who know him from movies like Scream, SLC Punk!, Thir13en Ghosts, or his present works, including the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s 2.

His genuine artistry was the quality most frequently referred to in the comments. A fan recounted how he had the director put him in the movie at his eighth-grade audition just because he was so nice to kids. Another shared, ‘You blessed my life AND my DnD dice some time ago… You are the sweetest and most real spirit I have ever had the honor of meeting.’ This narrative never wavers and at all times presents the same portrait of an actor who is so skilled that he can make the audience feel like they are his best friends.

The advertisement also tricky played on Lillard’s talent for reaching out to the unpopular. The audience lauded him for this. ‘Thank you for making it known that we can be nerdy and ourselves,’ one follower remarked. Another follower said, ‘thank you for granting nerds, outcasts and those who have never felt they truly belonged the hope that there is a future for us.’ This is greatly due to his filmography and hence his audience connection and ultimately the acceptance of Lillard being a real life character. His passion for games is well-known, as seen when Matthew Lillard prepares for a Dungeons and Dragons night with his massive dice collection.

No doubt the collaboration with Ryan Reynolds and Mint Mobile was a source of laughter. When one user asked ‘RYAN REYNOLDS AND MATTHEW LILLARD COLLAB???’, another person with a good sense of humor commented ‘I might have to move to mint mobile after this…’. The marketing ploy was widely praised with one person saying ‘You all get it perfectly!’ and another saying the team behind the concept should get a bonus.

The campaign was part of the big celebrity endorsement contracts but it managed to build confidence with the public and thus it was successful. It took the existing, very strong and deeply rooted affection of the public for Matthew Lillard and built on it. The ad just brought to light the admiration that has lasted for decades. The comment section which was thought to be less about a wireless service turned out to be a place where people celebrated a good actor with extraordinary talent. The ad finally did not shy away from the point it was making: the love for Matthew Lillard can almost be considered as unanimous. Fans are also eager to see him return as William Afton in the new FNAF sequel trailer.

His influence extends beyond entertainment, as evidenced by the heartfelt message Matthew Lillard delivered to UC Riverside students after a masterclass.
