Sarah Michelle, ‘Buffy’ Cast Pay Tribute to Anthony Head

Sarah Michelle Gellar’s tribute to her “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” co-star pulls at the heartstrings.

Anthony Head, best known as Giles and Buffy’s ever-faithful “watcher” on the supernatural series, died at the age of 72, his daughters, Emily and Daisy, confirmed on June 5.

In a fitting and emotional tribute, Gellar shared photos of her with Head over the years. Some of the snaps included fellow “Buffy” co-star Seth Green, as well as husband Freddie Prinze Jr. and a memorable moment between Giles and Buffy.

Gellar began her tribute with a quote from the Season 5 finale.

“‘Tell Giles I figured it out and I’m ok,’” Gellar began, quoting her character before she sacrifices herself to save the world. She then added, “Well I don’t have it figured out and I’m not ok. But I know I’m the lucky one because I knew you.”

“Thank you to Daisy and Emily who not only shared their dad with me, but with the world,” Gellar concluded.

The final slide in her tribute is a scene from the Season 2 episode titled “Lie to Me” when Buffy asks if life ever gets easier. When Giles asks her what she wants him to say, she tells him to lie to her.

“Yes, it’s terribly simple. The good guys are always stalwart and true. The bad guys are easily distinguished by their pointy horns or black hats. And we always defeat them and save the day. No one ever dies and everybody lives happily ever after,” he replies.

Head’s daughters announced in a statement shared with NBC News that their father “passed away peacefully of complications due to pneumonia, surrounded by his family.”

“We know how dearly he will be missed by friends, colleagues, and fans of the shows he was in — he loved his job very much, and he always considered himself incredibly lucky, to have been able to work alongside such exceptionally talented people, in such wonderful productions, across a career that spanned several decades,” they wrote in part.

A number of other “Buffy” stars also paid tribute to Head, including David Boreanaz.

In a statement to NBC News, the actor who portrayed Angel said, “Anthony was a pillar in the ‘Buffy’ universe and his kindness and sense of humor brought great energy to the set and the first time I met Him. Prayers go out to his family.”

On his Instagram story, he added, “RIP… he was so kind and generous of a soul.”

Emma Caulfield, who played Anya, shared a selfie with Head and reflected on their friendship.

“He was kind and wise and a guide in troubled times. You were so loved. Impossible to caption. You are so missed. rest in peace with your beautiful Sarah,” she wrote in part, mentioning Head’s longtime partner who died last year, according to the BBC.

James Marsters, known as Spike on the show, wrote on his Instagram, “There’s a hole in the World.”

“He was an unflaggingly kind and steady presence on the set of Buffy, and the best actor in the cast. He was the best of us,” he said, in part, adding that he was “lucky to have known, and learned from him.”

Charisma Carpenter, who portrayed Cordelia, also reflected on her time with Head, sharing on Instagram that while she was “not as close to Tony as some of the other cast were,” she’s “still feeling affected by this loss, and my heart is truly with my fellow classmates who remained close to him and his family to this day.”

She extended her condolences to his daughters, whom she hasn’t seen since they were little girls. “But I hear they embody every bit of the love, kindness, and commitment to others that their parents did,” she said.

After recalling meeting Head for the first time and working with him, she also mentioned the “Lie to Me” episode.

“His speech at the end could not feel more relevant today, not only in light of this news, but also given the state of the world,” she wrote. “I invite everyone to revisit it that cares to. Thankfully we can. For that I am grateful. Rest well, Tony. You are loved.”
