Tom Blyth Tries to Teach Craig Melvin How to Do the Worm on TODAY

Studio 1A or a dance studio?

TODAY co-anchor Craig Melvin was joined by “People We Meet on Vacation” stars Tom Blyth and Emily Bader Jan. 9 to discuss the newly released Netflix romantic comedy — and it resulted in a mini-dance lesson.

Based on Emily Henry’s 2021 novel of the same name, “People We Meet on Vacation” is a friends-to-lovers romance between two polar opposites, Poppy (Bader) and Alex (Blyth), who meet in college and maintain a friendship through annual summer trips.

One of those trips took them to New Orleans, during which Alex and Poppy pretend to be married to enjoy some complimentary items. To uphold the ruse, they lean into their alter married egos and perform a “fairly elaborate dance scene” — as Craig describes it — set to Paula Abdul’s “Forever Your Girl.”

While the scene may look improvised, Blyth and Bader said they actually practiced it for two days straight.

One highlight of the scene is when Blyth’s character busts out the worm on the dance floor.

During their interview on TODAY, Craig praised the actor’s moves.

“You’re really strong at the worm,” Craig said.

“Oh no,” Blyth responded. “Strong is maybe an over exaggeration.”

Blyth said the worm was not a skill he learned for the film, rather it’s one he already had, starting from when he was 8 years old.

“I fancied this girl and this other guy came into the school and did the worm and did a bunch of break dance moves, and he got the girl,” Blyth recalls.

“So I went home, and I practiced, and now it’s the only takeaway from that experience, was the worm,” he added.

Craig then asked for Blyth to demonstrate what makes a “good worm.”

“You got to limber up,” the actor advised.

Craig then got out of his chair, turning the studio into a makeshift dance floor.

“I was going to help you show the audience,” Craig said.

“I’m not going to do the worm,” Blyth initially said.

Famous last words.

“If you do it, I’ll do it,” Craig proposed, as both started to stretch.

Craig then took off his suit jacket, raring to go.

“They warned me about this,” Blyth said with a laugh. “Am I going to do the worm on a morning show?”

Seconds later, Blyth executed a flawless “light” version of the worm, to cheers and applause from Bader.

Craig then had to uphold his end of the bargain. He got onto the floor almost in a push-up position and gave his best attempt at rolling his body down in the classic worm motion.

“That was pretty good!” Blyth praised.

Carson Daly, however, had a different take. Carson had to watch it all unfold from Studio 1A, covering his eyes at one point.

“I apologize, Carson,” Craig said.

“Is it done?” Carson said, as Craig laughed. “By the way, that was so un-wormy.”
