Warning: Spoilers from Season 4, Episode 9 of “The Traitors.”
After the Faithfuls successfully sniffed out the identity of two Traitors two weeks in a row, OG Traitor Rob Rausch was the only one remaining in the turret…but maybe not for long.
When Episode 9 of the Peacock series began, the “Love Island USA” star, who turned on fellow Traitors and “Real Housewives” alums Lisa Rinna and Candiace Dillard Bassett, had carried out the task he received from host Alan Cumming at the end of the previous episode: recruit one of the Faithfuls to join him as a Traitor or die. Rausch chose singer Eric Nam to deliver the ultimatum to and shocked the musician when he revealed his true, treacherous identity.
So does Rausch have a new ally in the turret to bring to the end of the game? Or did Nam decide to die a Faithful? Read on for a recap of Episode 9 to find out. Plus, learn if the Faithfuls banished a Traitor for the third straight week.
Episode 9 picks up with Nam’s reaction to Rausch being a Traitor. Rausch offers Nam a chance to team up with him and says they can win together. The suspense is short-lived as Nam instantly wants to grab his cloak and head to the turret. “Alright, I’m in,” he tells Rausch.
But, Nam isn’t sure he will be able to pull off deceiving the others. “I need a helmet and an adult diaper because I’m about to s— my pants and my head’s about to explode. This is so stressful,” he says in his confessional. He also points out that although he is looking forward to working with Rausch, he could end up being betrayed like Rinna and Dillard Bassett.
In the turret, Rausch notes that he and Nam only have to survive three more Round Tables to win the game. The duo discuss their shortlist for murder: “The Real Housewives of New York City” alum Dorinda Medley, “Survivor” winner Natalie Anderson and “One Tree Hill” star Stephen Colletti.
“Top Chef” host Kristen Kish, “Dancing With the Stars” pro Mark Ballas and Rausch are the first trio to arrive for breakfast the next morning. Kish and Ballas discuss their theory that Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir is the remaining Traitor. They also wonder if he recruited fellow Olympic figure skater and his broadcasting co-host Tara Lipinski to the turret. When Weir enters the breakfast room, he senses that he is the next player on the chopping block.
The players discover that Medley is the latest casualty of the Traitors.
“I mean, I’m very sad but you know what they say: Curiosity kills the cat,” Medley says in a confessional after learning her fate. “I’m sure I’ve put a lot of faith into some of you, Traitors. And you know what, I would have loved to have stayed on, but, you know, the queen’s got to get back to Bluestone Manor.”
After breakfast, the players start throwing out more names. Anderson thinks Colletti’s reactions at breakfast were fake and Kish directly tells Lipinski she believes she is a Traitor. The others are still convinced Weir cannot be trusted. But Lipinski has his back, saying in a confessional, “They picked the wrong girl to mess with their best friend.”
For the mission, all the players have to climb into a box and close the lid. Inside, they will select the name of a player they think the Traitors chose as the answer to a question asked by Cumming. But, the Traitors weren’t given the questions ahead of time. So, when all the players enter their boxes, the Traitors have to sneak out, agree on their answer and then stealthily return to their boxes. The players have an opportunity to add $18,000 to the prize pot during this mission.
After hearing the first question — which player is the most useful for the Traitors —Rausch and Nam pick Lipinski for their answer. They then continue to choose her for every answer so that the Faithfuls don’t gain any helpful information. It takes the Faithfuls a few rounds before they figure out the plan. They only win $5,500.
The last question will determine one Faithful’s fate in the game. “Who do the Traitors want to shortlist for murder tonight?” Cumming asks. The four players chosen will be up for murder. Rausch wants to throw off the Faithfuls and suggests to Nam that the two of them don’t put themselves on the shortlist, assuming the Faithfuls will wrongly guess that a Traitor is in one of the boxes. So, Rausch and Nam decide to put Anderson, Weir, Lipinski and Kish at risk.
This far into the game, the players are unaware how close Lipinski and Weir are as the two have been downplaying their friendship. Realizing that Weir could be banished, they decide to reveal their relationship, hoping it will make them seem more trustworthy to the others.
Lipinski begins the Round Table discussion by speaking for herself and Weir, promising that they are both Faithfuls. The two say they blindly trust each other before suggesting Colletti is a Traitor. Weir also mentions Dillard Bassett pulling Colletti for a private conversation last episode as part of his evidence.
Colletti says their reasoning is “weak,” but Anderson is also suspicious of him. Meanwhile, Kish and Ballas are convinced Weir and Lipinski cannot be trusted.
Before the vote begins, Cumming asks if the player with the dagger wants to use their special power. Anderson tells Rausch to announce to everyone he has the dagger, and he does.
Most of the players vote for Colletti, banishing him from the castle. Weir and Lipinski receive two votes each.
While on the Circle of Truth, the actor says, “I just want to say it’s been the opportunity of a lifetime to play this game with all of you. I’ve been very excited to be here, eager to play the game and, maybe, sometimes a little bit that eagerness probably got the best of me. I respect you all, but I am a Faithful and you blew it.”
Many of the players are bummed, but Kish is irritated. She confronts Nam for not contributing during the Round Table. Then, she pulls Ballas and Rausch to the side and tells them she doesn’t trust Nam.
The episode ends with Nam and Rausch in the turret going through the pros and cons of murdering the four players who are vulnerable. Cumming informs viewers that the four players will be woken up in the middle of the night and sent to the castle dungeon. Then in Episode 10, out Feb. 19, they will each turn the handle of a jack-in-the-box. If a traitor pops out of the box, then that player will be murdered.
