Olivia Wilde Recalls the Moment She Realized Jason Sudeikis Relationship Was Over

Olivia Wilde is opening up about the conversation that led to her split from ex-fiancé Jason Sudeikis.

The 42-year-old actor and director was a guest on the June 17 episode of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast and opened up about her past relationships, including with the “Ted Lasso” star, 50. Wilde and Sudeikis, who share 12-year-old son Otis and 9-year-old daughter Daisy, started dating in 2011 and got engaged in 2013. The two called it quits in November 2020.

During her chat with host Alex Cooper, Wilde said that her upcoming movie “The Invite,” which she directs and also stars in, focuses on a couple coming to the realization that they’ve grown apart — a challenging moment she experienced with Sudeikis.

“There was never any public understanding, of course, because they’re not a part of our private lives, but of that breakup,” she said about calling off their engagement. “It’s no surprise to me that I ended up making a movie about relationships and the complexity of determining whether a relationship is over, because it is not an overnight process. It’s very difficult.”

She added that her film, which hits theaters June 26, is centered on “the idea that relationships can come to a place where you become strangers.”

Wilde then recalled the exact date and moment she realized it was time to end her relationship with Sudeikis. The “Don’t Worry Darling” director remembered it being her birthday on March 10, 2020, and attending a party with her then-fiancé.

She shared that the two “had been having a rough time there for a while.”

“We had a real bumpy, bumpy ride,” she added before going into detail about the pivotal conversation.

During the drive home from the birthday party her friends threw, Wilde asked Sudeikis if he bought her a present.

“He said, ‘What would I get you Olivia? I don’t know you,’” she told Cooper. “And he wasn’t wrong. We didn’t know each other anymore.”

Wilde said the interaction was one of the inspirations behind her movie because she wanted to explore the idea of two people getting to a place in their relationship where they stopped being curious about each other.

“That was when we realized it was over, and it was f—— tough. It brought us to the place of, like, ‘OK, this is done. We’re going to end this,’” she continued.

Wilde said that two days later the exes had to go into lockdown with each other when the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Sudeikis previously discussed their split in a 2021 interview with GQ where he said he wasn’t sure why they broke up.

“I’ll have a better understanding of why in a year,” he said at the time. “And an even better one in two, and an even greater one in five, and it’ll go from being, you know, a book of my life to becoming a chapter to a paragraph to a line to a word to a doodle.”

He also said he needed to process the experience and learn from it.

“You take some responsibility for it, hold yourself accountable for what you do, but then also endeavor to learn something beyond the obvious from it,” Sudeikis shared.
