Forty-six years to the day from the Miracle on Ice, the current U.S. hockey team will look to cement its place in history in the 2026 Winter Olympics gold medal game.

Team USA faces Canada in a final that can trace its legacy through the history of the Winter Games. Canada defeated the U.S. to win the first Olympic hockey championship in 1920 and also prevailed in the two most recent winner-take-gold matchups between the neighbors in 2002 and 2010.

Sidney Crosby famously scored the game-winner in overtime in the last matchup, and Canada’s captain is questionable for this matchup 16 years later after suffering an injury earlier in this year’s tournament.
Regardless of his status, though, both teams are stacked with elite players who have turned in one highlight after another during their time in Milan. Will Canada return to the top of the podium for the first time since 2014, or will the U.S. take home its first gold since 1980?
