Dermatologist-founded brand Dr Sam’s is perhaps best recognised for its Flawless Cleanser and Flawless Neutralising Gel, which have garnered a devoted following amongst skincare enthusiasts seeking to maintain clear and healthy-looking skin. Now, the brand has unveiled a brand new product designed to assist anyone battling dark spots, targeting post-acne marks or areas of pigmentation.

Dr Sam Bunting’s newest launch, the Flawless Brightly Pro Serum, is being tipped as one of the brand’s most sophisticated formulations to date. Engineered to address pigmentation at its source rather than merely lightening what’s apparent on the surface, the new £64 serum is clinically proven to fade brown spots by up to 62% in eight weeks, and 85% in 12 weeks, according to the brand.

Pigmentation ranks amongst the most prevalent skin concerns, affecting approximately half of all adults. While sun exposure can trigger it, factors including visible light, pollution, hormonal fluctuations, inflammation, acne and even heat all contribute to stimulating excess melanin production, reports the Mirror.

Numerous brightening products concentrate on just one aspect of the process, which can result in initial improvement before results stall, or dark spots reappear. Having witnessed this pattern repeatedly in her Harley Street clinic, Dr Sam Bunting resolved to develop a formula that functioned differently.

She spent two years developing Flawless Brightly Pro, testing 23 versions before settling on the final formula. Rather than targeting just one or two causes of pigmentation, this serum is designed to tackle all nine biological pathways involved in pigment formation. It also addresses what Dr Sam refers to as “zombie cells” – otherwise known as senescent cells – which can continue triggering recurring pigmentation even after dark spots appear to have disappeared.

Dr Sam Bunting explained: “I knew I had to create a solution for the millions of people who suffer with pigmentation. A product that could be used to tackle all nine biological pathways and, at the same time, help avoid the rebound phenomenon. Flawless Brightly Pro does just that. It’s a breakthrough, single serum that supports skin through each of the key stages of pigmentation development.

“Rather than layering multiple treatments for each stage of pigmentation, people now have a simpler and more efficient approach to treating pigmentation with a single formula, which also has the added benefit of saving them both time and money.”

Amongst the key ingredients is 10% azelaic acid, a highly regarded component favoured by dermatologists for its ability to soothe inflammation, diminish redness and improve post-acne pigmentation without the irritation frequently associated with stronger actives. Complementing this, ingredients such as niacinamide, arbutin, kojic dipalmitate and hexylresorcinol work to regulate melanin production and even out skin tone.

Also included is milk thistle extract, which the brand claims helps support collagen production and targets pigmentation linked to sun damage and melasma. Meanwhile, bakuchiol supports skin renewal and delivers retinol-like anti-ageing benefits without the same sensitivity concerns.

The formula has been developed to work across all skin tones, including deeper complexions where overly aggressive brightening treatments can sometimes worsen pigmentation rather than improve it. It is also fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, pregnancy-safe, vegan and cruelty-free, making it suitable for sensitive, acne-prone and reactive skin types too.

Elsewhere, the Rapid Dark Spot Correcting Serum from Murad costs £83 for a 30ml bottle, and is said to rapidly reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation without a doctor’s visit. This intensive serum promotes surface cell turnover for brighter, more even-toned skin.

At Boots, the Caudalie Vinoperfect Brightening Dark Spot Serum 30ml costs £52 and is reportedly 62 times more effective than vitamin C. Consequently, it sells one bottle every 30 seconds.

Unlike harsher treatment serums, Dr Sam’s is designed for morning use and is said to layer effortlessly beneath moisturiser, SPF and makeup. It is fairly potent, so users are advised to initially apply every other day to build tolerance. It can subsequently be used up to twice daily, though it should be used alone without other actives, which may not suit those who already follow an actives-led skincare routine.

Early testers of the serum have been left ‘amazed’ by their results. One remarked: “The main difference I’ve noticed is a noticeable reduction in the patch of pigmentation on my forehead. It actually amazed me. Prior to starting the top secret serum I needed concealer on top of my foundation to cover that area but this week I haven’t.”

Another noted: “It’s really refreshing to use a product where I can see results without it affecting my sensitive skin. The texture is lovely and it absorbs into the skin really quickly – so handy when you’re in a rush in the morning.

“Lovely, absorbs quickly and easily and you don’t need to wait around much before applying moisturiser or in cream,” a third wrote. “It doesn’t irritate or dry the skin and I feel like my skin is smoother and brighter with using it.”

A further tester commented: “I’ve had great results on my neck and chest, with a real reduction in dark spots and a better complexion.”

To date, the serum has attracted no negative feedback, though some shoppers may baulk at the £64 price tag. That said, rather than juggling an array of separate acids, serums and solutions, it could present a far more straightforward alternative to layering numerous brightening products simultaneously.

For added defence against pigmentation, Dr Sam advises applying a moisturiser and sunscreen over the top, or even a tinted sunscreen for extra protection against blue light. Without consistent sun protection, results may take longer to achieve or dark spots could reappear, meaning the serum performs best as part of a comprehensive skincare routine rather than as a standalone wonder product.

For those who have long battled with stubborn pigmentation, the Flawless Brightly Pro Serum could well prove to be one of the most compelling launches of the spring season.
